Despite the highly acclaimed
literacy supremacy of Kerala State in India, the fishing
communities remain marginalized, unattended, and under-developed
in terms of education, employment, and standard of living
in general. The latest school final examination result makes
the picture so vivid. While the State averages 63.5% success
for the ear 2002-03, most of the coastal schools in the
Trivandrum Latin Diocese remain contrary with below 50%.
Since man of the socio-economic conditions go in accordance
with the political vested interests of the State, an effort
to catapult the coastal communities would be limited and
hazardous. Still the Trivandrum Latin Catholic Diocese,
through its multi-faceted intervention strategies and innovative
developmental programmes, tries hard to make some positive
change in the coming years.
Of
course it is just like the egg-chicken paradox if we try
to understand what causes what between education and economic
conditions. While it is clear that lack of education leads
to unemployment and poverty, the major antecedent factors
for low education in the coastal areas are poor living conditions
with inadequate study facilities, lack of parental care,
and lack of motivation. Since it is easy to go from education
to economy, the Education Board of the Diocese launches
an innovative programme that titles Centres of Excellence.
